The disappearing Water course
Fairlee Hole is a bit of an enigma. It pops up and then disappears in Newport.
We were asked by a local Councillor to trace its course, and we felt that it ran through peoples back gardens, so before visiting we printed off the water-course later from our GIS system and the image below also shows a watercourse that starts in Upper Fairlee, only to disappear and re-appear for a small reach in the vicinity of Cross Lane. Then disappear again!

So armed with the above map, we went hunting, and it is true, the watercourse has been culverted under much of Newport.
By adding a surface water flooding layer to our above map, we a very good idea as to where the watercourse would have been, given that the water will always find the lowest points.
