Our priorities for the Island’s watercourses

In 2021 Island Rivers Partnership identified the following projects as part of the River Basin Management Plan process:

Enhancement/no deterioration measures in 2020-2025 Water Industry National Environment Programme
Reintroduction of natural processes to Eastern Yar,  Alverstone Marshes SSSI and other wetlands within catchment.
Adoption of catchment sensitive farming practices throughout the Isle of Wight catchment
Saltmarsh restoration projects and investigations.
Work with local coastal partnerships and the MMO to improve integration between catchment and coastal management
Restoration of Freshwater Marshes SSSI
Wroxall Stream – improvements to water quality and removal of barriers
Invasive species management – predominantly Himalayan balsam, Japanese knotweed and Crassula helmsii
Protection of Gunville Stream from development pressures
Removal of fish impoundments throughout Newport Rivers
Reintroduce natural processes and fish passage on E Yar at Alverstone Mill.

In addition, raising awareness and creating and improving access remain priorities.
